Studently is a study planner, built to be data-minimal by design:
No user account. There is no registration and no login.
No advertising or analytics trackers. We do not use tracking SDKs and do not build usage profiles.
Your data stays with you. Your study data is stored locally on your device. On iOS it is additionally synced into your personal iCloud when iCloud is enabled (section 4); on Android, a backup to your own Google Drive is prepared but not yet enabled in the currently published version (section 5).
Data reaches our servers only when you trigger it yourself: the optional calendar sync (section 6) and redeeming a voucher code (section 7).
3. Data processed by the app
You enter the following data yourself; it is processed solely to provide the app's features:
Study data: degree programs, semesters and their dates, courses/modules (incl. room, ECTS, colors), timetable entries, assignments and exams (incl. due dates and notes), grades, study blocks and one-off events
Instructor contact details, if you add them (name, optionally e-mail, phone, office hours)
Settings (e.g. appearance, active degree program)
Legal basis: Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR (providing the features you request).
4. Local storage and iCloud sync (iOS)
Your data is stored on your device. If iCloud is enabled on your device, the app additionally syncs your data via Apple iCloud (CloudKit) into your private iCloud database so it is available on all your devices.
This data is tied to your Apple ID; we have no access to it.
The provider is Apple Inc. / Apple Distribution International Ltd.; Apple's privacy policy applies in addition.
You can disable iCloud sync for Studently at any time in the iOS settings (Apple ID → iCloud).
Legal basis: Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR.
5. Optional backup to Google Drive (Android)
Not yet enabled: in the currently published Android version the app connects no Google account and stores no backup in Google Drive. This section describes what will apply once we enable the feature in an update.
On Android, your data is stored locally on the device only by default. Under Settings → “Datenspeicher” (Data storage) you may optionally connect your Google account to store a backup in your own Google Drive. The following applies:
Scope requested: the app requests the drive.appdata scope only. This grants access solely to a hidden, application-specific folder in your Drive. The app has no access to any of your other Google Drive files – it can neither read nor list them.
Contents of the backup: a copy of the app database and your app settings, i.e. the data listed in section 3 (profile, study programs, semesters, courses, appointments, assignments and exams, grades, study blocks, lecturer details, settings).
Storage and access: the backup resides in your personal Google account. We have no access to it; the data is neither transmitted to us nor stored on our servers. The provider is Google Ireland Limited / Google LLC; the Google Privacy Policy applies in addition.
When it happens: a backup is created only when you explicitly trigger it (“Jetzt sichern” / Back up now). There is no automatic background transfer.
Withdrawal and deletion: “Verbindung trennen” (Disconnect) ends the use within the app. You can revoke the access itself entirely in your Google account under “Security → Third-party apps with account access”. The stored backup can be deleted in Google Drive under “Settings → Manage apps”.
Legal basis: your consent, Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR (connecting your Google account). You may withdraw it at any time with effect for the future.
Android system backup: independently of this, Android may include app data in the device-wide backup to your Google account. You control this in the Android settings under “Google → Backup”.
6. Optional calendar sync (subscription link)
If you enable calendar sync in the settings, the app creates a calendar feed (ICS) that you can subscribe to in Apple Calendar, Google Calendar or Outlook:
Transferred data: titles and times of your courses/events, assignments/exams and study blocks. Grades and profile data are not transferred.
Storage: the feed is stored on our server infrastructure (Cloudflare, Inc.) under a randomly generated, unguessable address. It can only be accessed by someone who knows this address – treat the subscription link like a password.
International transfer: Cloudflare operates a global network; processing outside the EU/EEA is possible. Cloudflare is certified under the EU-US Data Privacy Framework; standard contractual clauses apply in addition.
Access by calendar services: if you subscribe to the feed in e.g. Google Calendar or Outlook, that provider fetches the feed data under its own privacy policy.
Deletion: if you disable sync in the settings, the feed is deleted from the server.
Legal basis: your consent, Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR (enabling the toggle). You may withdraw consent at any time with future effect by disabling sync.
7. Subscriptions and payments
The Studently Pro subscription is purchased exclusively through the store you obtained the app from – the Apple App Store or Google Play. The respective provider handles all payment processing; we receive no payment data (e.g. no credit card details), only an anonymous confirmation of your subscription status via the StoreKit framework (iOS) or Google Play Billing (Android). The privacy terms of Apple and Google apply in addition.
Voucher and promotional codes: when you redeem a code in the app, the app sends that code to our server so it can be verified. Only the code you entered and whether a code has already been redeemed on this device are transmitted – no name, no device or user identifier and none of your study data. All we store per code is how often it has been redeemed; this allows no conclusions about you. As with any web request, our infrastructure provider Cloudflare processes technically necessary connection data (e.g. the IP address). Legal basis: Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR (providing the features you asked for).
8. No analytics, no advertising
The app contains no advertising and no third-party analytics or tracking services. Apple and Google may provide us with aggregated, anonymous statistics (e.g. download numbers, crash reports – if you opted in during device setup) through App Store Connect and the Google Play Console; these do not allow conclusions about individual persons.
9. Retention
Local and iCloud data remain stored until you delete them in the app or uninstall the app (iCloud data can additionally be deleted via the iOS settings).
Google Drive backup (Android, once enabled): remains in your Google account until you delete it there (Drive → Settings → Manage apps). Disconnecting inside the app does not delete a backup that has already been stored.
Calendar feed: until you disable calendar sync.
Voucher codes: a redemption counter per code remains stored for as long as the campaign runs – with no link to you or your device.
10. Your rights
You have the right to access (Art. 15 GDPR), rectification (Art. 16), erasure (Art. 17), restriction of processing (Art. 18), data portability (Art. 20) and objection (Art. 21). You may withdraw any consent at any time (Art. 7(3)). You also have the right to lodge a complaint with a data protection supervisory authority (Art. 77 GDPR).
Since your study data lives locally, in your private iCloud or in your own Google Drive, you can exercise most of these rights (access, rectification, deletion) directly within the app or in your Apple or Google account.
11. Changes
We will update this privacy policy when the app's features or the legal situation change. The current version is always available at this page. The German version is the authoritative version.
